Do you recall the days spent at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s cottage in the country side? When everyday you were treated like royalty and each day seemed to last for eons? When to play was life’s essence and to eat was a bothersome interlude in between hide & seek and bug hunting? My childhood memories, engraved on this simple, yet thoroughly renovated, house, make each visit feel like a pilgrimage to the age of innocence.
At a bit over 100 square meters and able to accommodate 6 adults, Grandpa’s Tree House is ideal for a family or for 2-3 couples wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern day life. The ground floor consists of an open plan kitchen, a sitting area with a fireplace, and a versatile dining table. An unassuming staircase leads to the attic where a sofa bed sleeps two and a French style door leads to a small balcony; the ideal place to end the day sipping Assyrtiko while watching the sun disappear into the deep blue of the Aegean. The lower level consists of the master bedroom with its en suite bathroom, a second bedroom, and a separate bathroom. The patio door of the master bedroom opens up to a large front yard, where the toddlers can run wild yet within a safely enclosed area.
Having spent plenty a summer days over the last thirty years at Grandpa’s, I have no doubt that what make this house special are its exterior sitting areas and its lush Mediterranean garden. Oak, palm, cypress and olive trees, a bougainvillea, a couple of pines, and a plethora of indigenous plants surround a petite pool ideal for cooling oneself on a hot summer day. Behind the pool’s main resting area stands our beloved “tree house”. My Grandpa got the idea from the American TV serials of the 1950s and 60s but since there were (and are) hardly any large trees on Kea able to sustain a regular tree house, he ended up building an independent dwelling capable of entertaining 2-3 toddlers. To honor him, two summers ago the kids and grandkids - now in their late 60s and 30s respectively - reconstructed the whole structure with modern materials over three days of feasting (and toiling).
I would be more than eager to host you at my Grandpa’s summer house and give you plenty of tips for an eventful stay on the off-the-beaten-track island of Kea.
