Do you recall the days spent at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s cottage in the country side? When everyday you were treated like royalty and each day seemed to last for eons? When to play was life’s essence and to eat was a bothersome interlude in between hide & seek and bug hunting? My childhood memories, engraved on this simple, yet thoroughly renovated, house, make each visit feel like a pilgrimage to the age of innocence.

At a bit over 100 square meters and able to accommodate 6 adults, Grandpa’s Tree House is ideal for a family or for 2-3 couples wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern day life. The ground floor consists of an open plan kitchen, a sitting area with a fireplace, and a versatile dining table. An unassuming staircase leads to the attic where a sofa bed sleeps two and a French style door leads to a small balcony; the ideal place to end the day sipping Assyrtiko while watching the sun disappear into the deep blue of the Aegean. The lower level consists of the master bedroom with its en suite bathroom, a second bedroom, and a separate bathroom. The patio door of the master bedroom opens up to a large front yard, where the toddlers can run wild yet within a safely enclosed area.

Having spent plenty a summer days over the last thirty years at Grandpa’s, I have no doubt that what make this house special are its exterior sitting areas and its lush Mediterranean garden. Oak, palm, cypress and olive trees, a bougainvillea, a couple of pines, and a plethora of indigenous plants surround a petite pool ideal for cooling oneself on a hot summer day. Behind the pool’s main resting area stands our beloved “tree house”. My Grandpa got the idea from the American TV serials of the 1950s and 60s but since there were (and are) hardly any large trees on Kea able to sustain a regular tree house, he ended up building an independent dwelling capable of entertaining 2-3 toddlers. To honor him, two summers ago the kids and grandkids - now in their late 60s and 30s respectively - reconstructed the whole structure with modern materials over three days of feasting (and toiling).

I would be more than eager to host you at my Grandpa’s summer house and give you plenty of tips for an eventful stay on the off-the-beaten-track island of Kea.

Accurate & Reassuring

Constantine was an excellent host both before we arrived in Greece and while we were there. We were traveling at a time of political uncertainty for Greece and Constantine offered us accurate and reassuring information about the reality of the situation. My family loved the accommodation and the island and would return. There is much to do, with water-sports a high point (Kea Divers are excellent). There are no big hotels or resorts, but local food, good weather, nice places to eat (on the beach at Vourkari) and a welcoming population. The ferry takes an hour and there is at least 2 two each day each way with no need to book in advance.

The Perfect Host

Constantine is the perfect host. He was really helpful and wonderful with us, patient and such an interesting person. It was a real pleasure to meet him and to be his guests as that is what you feel like with him : a guest, a very welcomed guest and friend. The house was wonderful too. It's well equipped, has everything you need to relax and enjoy your holidays. It's situated next to beautiful Ioulis (you'll soon discover that there is a shortcut to the little supermarket, bakery and the town) and it is really quiet. We stayed at this place at the end of May and you should know that there were no busses (at this time of the year). So when everybody tells you that you need a car, listen to them and get a car :) Fortunately Constantine was there to arrange a car for us with the local rental car company. So we could discover more of this beautiful island and also : go to the beaches… As you have really nice views on the sea from the house it would have been sad not to go there. You also have several hiking trails that pass next to the house and next to Ioulis. Weather was mostly fine. Consider it can be quite windy up there. If there isn't any wind you'll be just fine, but if winds are up, you'll need some warm clothes if you want to stay outside. But of course, you still can be inside and enjoy the wonderful view on the port from the big window in the living room. We were a party of 5 adults and a kid and we had enough room for all of us. There are 2 bathrooms, 2 sleeping rooms and an attic (?) with 2 more beds, several terraces… It is a little castle :) One point I was a little bit skeptical about in the beginning was the Internet connection which is only assured by some kind of wireless USB modem. So 5 iPhones do definitely knock it out and you'll have to reduce your Internet consumption. BUT, thanks to this I had a real break from my every day life, from my job and even if I stayed only some days at Constantine's place, it was so relaxing that I had the impression of real BIG holidays. I could go on and praise this place, but best thing you can do is to discover it on your own. Enjoy your vacation ! :)

Perfect Host

Constantine was the perfect host - he met us from the ferry and guided us to the villa - It's perfectly situated up in the mountains, about 10 mins drive from the port. Arriving at the villa, you're met with stunning views over Kea, and a very private and relaxed living environment. It has all mod cons and has a mezzanine level with an extra bed and balcony. Everything is maintained to a high standard. Nice decor, and the garden is really lush. Constantine is super cool, helpful, easy going and always on the end of the phone if you need to get hold of him. I'd really recommend this place, we had a great time staying there.

Grandpa's Tree House was Great

We could not possibly recommend this house more highly. Our family of four (kids 9 and 4) spent 2 wonderful, peaceful and relaxing weeks here in July and came away wishing we could be there a lot longer. Grandpa’s Tree House was great - the kids loved the pool especially (so did we) - and came fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. Kea is a beautiful, genuinely unspoilt, mountainous island which we explored by car and foot (be prepared for a lot of uphill / downhill if you go by foot). There are some great secluded beaches to find and some lovely tavernas offering traditional food and a warm, friendly welcome. We would say hiring a car is a must – in fact, we were unexpectedly upgraded to a 4x4 SUV type, which was useful but not a necessity – the roads are generally pretty good. From Athens, it was a surprisingly quick journey to the port of Lavrio and then on to the island – in total it took us just over 2 hours from the centre of Athens to the house, but it felt like another world. Finding the house and checking in went very smoothly. The Kea Family Homes team is friendly, amusing, articulate and very helpful. The weather , although hot, never became oppressive due to the gentle mountain breezes, and the house itself stays cool especially the bedrooms which are in the cellar, built into the side of the mountain. We will definitely return!
